Black migrants who trekked from Haiti and through South America are being violently attacked at the U.S. southern border. It's a devastating reality that cannot be ignored.

Cruelty in a humanitarian crisis is the opposite of what we’ve fought for and young people will not stand by while this happens. Seeking asylum is legal. Yet, these Haitian families–who came seeking protection, to escape from natural disasters, poverty and violence, and political instability–have been met with more violence by American border patrol agents.

The Biden administration must do more to protect Haitians, starting by immediately halting deportations back to Haiti. The administration must also, at a bare minimum:

  • Ensure that all people at the border are treated humanely and given food and water, shelter, and medical care as needed.
  • Investigate and hold accountable the actions of U.S. Border Patrol in recent days, including the horrific images of agents apparently using whips on Haitian migrants.
  • Commit to a firm timeline to end Title 42, the Trump-era policy that has been invoked to turn away individuals seeking asylum.

Tell the Biden-Harris administration to stop all expulsion flights and create a just and humane immigration system now.  We need to restart our asylum system, not close the door to our most vulnerable.
